A Spiritual Seeker begins his journey into the realm of intrapersonal discovery. Along the way he encounters various life as well as Universal lessons and develops a comprehensive understanding of himself as a unique spark of Divine Consciousness. Through conversations and encounters with what Carl Jung described as ‘Archetypal’ representations of various patterns of experiences or lessons, the Seeker begins to recognize that he is the Architect of his reality, and as such, has the ability to choose from among a vast array of interactions and events in order to experience everything from despair to delight. The learning experience is not linear or direct. It is convoluted and moves in fits and starts rather than progressing discreetly from one lesson to the next.
There is discernible vulnerability in the Seeker’s approach to various insights. As observers, we begin to realize that he is wandering, without a clear purpose, from one encounter to the next and gleaning whatever wisdom might be present within each of the interactions.
While integrating the lessons into a cohesive world view is certainly a desired result, it is not the recognized goal at this point. We begin to hope for the best and even cheer from the sidelines as our Seeker approaches another unpredictable and sometimes even volatile life lesson. The Seeker’s answer to any given experience is also unpredictable and reactive rather than responsive. He may fall confused, overwhelmed, curling into an introspective huddle. He may leap from pathway to promontory in enthusiastic glee at his most
recent discovery. The roller coaster progression of his life becomes a metaphor for all of those on the path to Higher Consciousness. There are no clear directions, and, whatever signposts may appear along the way, they are in a language or rather the ‘dialect’ specific to the place and time, not necessarily the explorer.
Other people will play supporting roles in the drama unfolding and some characters stand out as significant and have a profound impact, whether for good or ill. The ‘worst case’ outcome is a defining lesson to be integrated and distilled into greater wisdom which becomes discernment.
At some point we, as the observer, become caught up in the emotions and the narrative of the Spiritual Seeker and find ourselves drawing comparisons and gaining insight based on our own beliefs and biases. We begin to understand his fears and motivations and enter the journey of discovery in earnest as we come to understand that we too, are Seekers.
There may be a willingness to follow wherever Spirit leads. However, many wait patiently at the edge of the abyss for a sign to indicate the direction of the next step. We eventually come to understand that simple willingness is not enough. In fact, absolute willingness is just the first step. What follows is not a sign from the heavens but a stepping from Trust into the Abyss. Unless we are prepared and able to take this leap, we will stand forever waiting for a sign to appear. It is this stepping from the known edge of reality that provides the perspective needed to be able to see the required course of action, invisible from the safety of the cliff’s edge. It is quite literally the act of letting go of the known that allows us to see beyond, into the unknown and mystical realm of self-discovery.
Once trust has become instinctive, we are then presented with examples of the nature of Divine Order. It may not align with our personality’s preference (or bias), but at some pivotal moment we come to recognize the perfection in the pattern and after enough
experiences of this ‘Highest and Best for All Concerned’ unfolding, we approach a new state of being that is beyond simple trust. There is now an awareness in our consciousness that transcends doubt and no longer requires faith as it provides the basis for new confidence and certainty. This is the physiological certainty that becomes the impetus
for entering the formless void without doubt or hesitation.
This journey is described through the eyes of the Seeker as he confronts and integrates lessons and experiences in the ongoing evolution toward greater consciousness. He begins with the certainty that he must step into the abyss but is initially innocent as to the ongoing role he plays in determining the course of his explorations.
As the embodiment of the evolved archetypal Fool, he represents our point of consciousness as we begin to question life’s meaning and purpose. Our understanding goes through a transformation as well. At one end of the spectrum of experience, we
see perception as simply receiving information, and at the other extreme there is judgment determining whether the situation or experience is ‘good’ or ‘bad.’ As we evolve to a higher perspective, we find a balanced, center point which is known as discernment. We are able to integrate the spectrum, discover discernment, and release judgment by including the wisdom of experience to the foundation of perception.
From this balanced perspective, we can distinguish discernment as a valid point of view. We gain insight into the dynamic of interactive and intentional growth as we take the next step on the path of greater understanding.
