Why Evolve Tarot
The symbolism and meaning of the 78 or so cards thought of as the Tarot has been debated and researched and restructured and hidden and redefined many times over the past several hundred years. The facts of its history have been shrouded in contradictions and myth. Since the turn of the last century with occult and various secret societies claiming primary authority but, in general agreeing loosely on the basic meaning of the symbols, the Tarot has become extremely popular, and a wide variety of symbol sets have come into mainstream awareness and usage.
I recently found a great little bookstore and I was inspired by a new Tarot deck with some descriptive words. Some I found I did not resonate with or understand in the same way.
Suddenly, in February 2025, I was immersed in a frenzy of creating the Evolve deck, finding the words for the companion book and seeing it off to the publisher by my personal deadline of the end of March 2025. I intended to include the flavor of the traditional interpretation with a focus on the next step as far as it could grow and evolve. The Hermetic Principles and Universal Laws as well as the Seven Sacred Directions and Energy Centers add another layer of meaning to the energies expressed by the Major Arcana. The Fool has evolved beyond the need to embody trust to leap off the cliff into the abyss. He is now the spiritual ‘Seeker’, willing to do whatever it takes to add to his knowledge and understanding of the more traditional Fool’s Journey. As he interacts with the 21 Archetypes, he gains insight and understanding that takes him to another, deeper layer of consciousness as he integrates and processes the lessons encountered.
What I have finally discovered and defined, for myself at least, is a new way of working with the traditional symbols and meanings. The focus is on taking the next step, intentionally evolving to a more conscious and ‘response – able’ human being. The images are meant to evoke an energetic response aligned with the element of the card. The words are simply hints that reflect a recognition of the history and background of the symbol, with the added element of that ‘next step’ awareness.
Whatever tomorrow brings, I have explored the vast space of my imagination and found an endless capacity for joy.
